Studies have found links between long-term Prilosec and Nexium use and the development of stomach cancers. Prilosec and Nexium are proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). They are made to lower the production of acid in the stomach. Long-term use of the drug has been found to increase the risk of stomach cancer by as much as 250% in some people.
What are PPIs
Nexium and Prilosec are PPIs. Most PPIs are available over the counter or by prescription. They function by blocking an enzyme that regulates the production of acid in the stomach. With the enzyme suppressed, the stomach doesn’t produce excess acid. This is all to help with acid reflux (GERD), duodenal or stomach ulcers, Helicobacter pylori (H-pylori), and erosive esophagitis.
PPIs are one of the most commonly prescribed medications in the U.S.
The Problem with PPIs
Studies show that regular, long-term use of PPIs may be connected to a nearly 250% increased risk of stomach cancer. With higher doses and more extended treatment periods, the risk of cancer rises. While considered safe for short-term use and treatment, long-term use of the drugs has been associated with potential harm, including stomach cancer.
